Spectral analysis of the cooling phase of an x - ray superburst in 4 U 1636 - 53

چکیده
We analyzed the cooling phase of an x-ray superburst of the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 using different models in XSPEC software. Our goal was to find the behavior of certain properties of the neutron star, e.g. radius and temperature, and to find the chemical composition of the neutron star atmosphere. We tried 6 different models for the cooling phase of the superburst and found that the best fit came from a model consisting of a blackbody, a power law, a gaussian emission line and an absorption edge. We found that the bolometric flux versus blackbody temperature relation, F ∝ T 4 bb, does not hold, telling us that the blackbody radius changes over time. We also conclude from the color-correction factor that the superburst is a product of metal burning, fueled most likely by carbon.

Spin Down of Pulsations in the Cooling Tail of an X-ray Burst from 4U 1636-53
We report the discovery with the proportional counter array (PCA) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of a decrease in the frequency of X-ray brightness oscillations in the cooling tail of an X-ray burst from 4U 1636-53. This is the first direct evidence for a spin down of the pulsations seen during thermonuclear bursts. We find that the spin down episode is correlated with the appea...
متن کاملRecurrent very - long type - I X - ray bursts in the low - mass X - ray binary 4 U 1636 – 53
Two flares with a duration of several hours are reported for the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636–53. The characteristics of these flares (i.e., decay time scales, spectral softening, fluences) are very similar to the very long type-I X-ray bursts recently found in several other low-mass X-ray binaries, suggesting that the flares in 4U 1636–53 are also very long type-I X-ray bursts. This would mak...

متن کاملKiloHertz quasi – periodic oscillations difference frequency exceeds inferred spin frequency in 4 U 1636 – 53
Recent observations of the low–mass X–ray binary 4U 1636–53 with the Rossi X– ray Timing Explorer show, for the first time, a kiloHertz quasi–periodic oscillation (kHz QPO) peak separation that exceeds the neutron star spin frequency as inferred from burst oscillations. This strongly challenges the sonic–point beat frequency model for the kHz QPOs found in low–mass X–ray binaries. We detect two...
متن کاملCorrelated X - ray spectral and fast - timing behaviour of 4 U 1636 - 53
We present a study of the persistent X-ray emission from the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636−53 based on the entire archival EXOSAT ME data set. We performed a homogeneous analysis of all five EXOSAT observations in terms of the correlated rapid X-ray variability and X-ray spectral properties by means of power spectra, and colour-colour and hardnessintensity diagrams, respectively. Over the years...
